Representing the Vocational Education in Schools NSW team to compete in the WorldSkills Australia 2023 National Championships held in Melbourne 17-19 August 2023, Newman College students returned with nine medals and contributed to the NSW team bringing home the WorldSkills VETis Shield for 2023.
Competitors were challenged to perform tasks in their skill area and judged intrinsically on their processes, practices and outcomes. The students remained focused throughout their competition category’s allocated time. Seemingly not phased by the spectators or the judges’ peering gazes.
“It is challenging and intense but incredibly rewarding. Seeing the students perform under these circumstances makes you feel so proud. In more ways than one, it is a real journey. From developing the skills, regional competitions, practice, practice practice, the trip to Melbourne and then to finally competing and supporting team members. Such a fantastic experience where really, every one of them is a winner. For the medalist, particularly the Gold, it’s well-deserved recognition of being at the top of their trade”. Congratulations.” Karen Warneken Leader of Learning – VET Curriculum.
